Passover celebrated by Jesus and the apostles
If the Passover is just the teachings of the Old Testament, then we must not observe the Passover since Jesus came to this earth to save us in the New Testament era. But Jesus Christ kept the Passover with his disciples.
Matthew 26:17–19 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.” So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
Jesus clearly said that he would celebrate the Passover with his disciples. And if we look at Luke’s account of the same situation, Jesus says he was eager to keep this Passover with his disciples.
Luke 22:15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
If it was a Passover that did not need to be observed in the New Testament era, would Jesus have wanted to keep the Passover with His disciples? The fact that Jesus eagerly wanted to keep it means that the Passover was not simply the law of the Old Testament. Therefore, if you are a true Christian who believes in and follows Jesus, you must keep the Passover.
Some argue that the Passover was kept before Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, but there is no need to keep it after that. However, this too is a false claim. The apostles continued to keep the Passover even after the sacrifice on the cross.
1 Corinthians 5:7–8 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Therefore, we must follow the example of Jesus and the apostles and keep the Passover of the new covenant. Following the example of Jesus and the apostles, the World Mission Society Church of God keeps the Passover of the New Covenant holy.
