The Goal of Faith and the Passover

The Bible testifies that the purpose of our faith is to receive the salvation of our souls.

1 Peter 1:8–9 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

What does the salvation of our souls mean specifically? That is eternal life. Because if we are not saved, our souls will die in hell because of our sins.

1 John 2:25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.

Therefore, we can say that the purpose of our faith is eternal life. Then, what did Jesus, our Savior, say to obtain eternal life?

John 6:53–54 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

He said that the only way to obtain eternal life is to eat the flesh of Jesus and drink the blood of Jesus. Then how can we eat the flesh of Jesus and drink the blood of Jesus?

Matthew 26:17–19 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’ ” So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

Matthew 26:26–28 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Therefore, those who eat and drink the Passover bread and wine are those who eat and drink the flesh and blood of Jesus. Then, what will those who keep the Passover get? They will get eternal life. Conversely, those who do not keep the Passover will never gain eternal life. The purpose of faith, the salvation of souls, can only be obtained by observing the Passover.

Therefore, like Jesus and his disciples, we must keep the Passover to obtain eternal life, which is the purpose of faith.
