The Ten Commandments and the Sabbath

Many churches in the world claim that the Sabbath was abolished because it was an Old Testament law. However, the commandment to keep the Sabbath is the fourth of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11). Then, is it not necessary to keep the Ten Commandments in the New Testament Age?

Let’s check the content of the Ten Commandments. What is the first of the Ten Commandments? It says, “You shall have no other gods before me.”

Exodus 20:1-3 And God spoke all these words: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me.

But since this first commandment was the law of the Old Testament, it was abolished, and in the New Testament era, can we say that it is okay to worship other gods? no. No one who believes in God thinks like that. In other words, even in the New Testament era, we must keep the first commandment. So what about the second commandment, “You shall not make idols,” or the third commandment, “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God”?

Exodus 20:4–7 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

If you believe in God, you must observe this as well. Then How about the fifth through tenth commandments?

Exodus 20:12–17 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal. “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

If you are God’s people, of course, shouldn’t you keep all these commandments? After all, from the first commandment to the tenth commandment, there is no commandment that we can neglect. But can you say that you need to keep all the other nine commandments out of the Ten Commandments, but you don’t need to keep the fourth commandment? It can’t be. That’s a contradictory claim to anyone’s eyes. If the Sabbath was abolished, the other nine commandments do not need to be kept, and if the other nine commandments must be kept, the Sabbath must also be kept.

Therefore, the claim that the Sabbath was abolished because it was an Old Testament law is false. The fourth commandment is clearly written in the Bible.

Exodus 20:8–10 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God.

Even today, we must keep the fourth commandment, the Sabbath day, holy.
