The Sabbath to be observed until the end of the world

God commanded His people to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Then how long must we keep the Sabbath? Some argue that the Sabbath is only a law in the Old Testament era and does not need to be observed in the New Testament era. Will it be so? Let’s check it out through the words of Jesus who is our Savior and the standard of faith.

The disciples once asked Jesus about the Second Coming and the end of the world.

Matthew 24:3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

At that time, Jesus gave many words, among which was a word about the Sabbath.

Matthew 24:20–21 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.

Jesus spoke of the tribulation that will come at the end of the world. However, he told us to pray so that this tribulation would not happen in winter or on the Sabbath. Why did he tell us to pray so that tribulation would not happen on the Sabbath? On the Sabbath, the saints must worship in a holy way, but when the last tribulation occurs, they cannot offer perfect worship to God. Doesn’t this mean that we must keep the Sabbath until the end of the world?

Jesus is the God who sees the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10). So, if there is no longer a need to keep the Sabbath in New Testament times, Jesus must not say, “Pray that your flight will not take place on the Sabbath.”

Therefore, the claim that there is no need to keep the Sabbath in the New Testament era is false, and it is against the teachings of Jesus. We must keep the Sabbath day holy until the end of the age, remembering the words of Jesus, “Pray that your flight will not take place on the Sabbath”
