Labor Which Is Not In Vain

King Solomon lamented that our life on this earth is meaningless like a chase after wind. Then why does mankind waste their time for the meaningless things and end their life without achieving anything that they can consider meaningful?

The bible says that God did not create anything to be meaningless. If then, why the waste of time on this earth? We have to find answer not to live a meaningless life.

Isaiah 45:18 For this is what the Lord says—he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited—he says: “I am the Lord, and there is no other.

When God created anything, God put His will in it, which means everything was created according to certain intention of God for it. Therefore, nothing was created to be meaningless.

Revelation 4:11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

For this reason, we can conclude that God put certain meaning in human beings when he created us. And we are not supposed to live a meaningless life according to the plan of God. Then why does the writer of Ecclesiastes, King Solomon, writes that everything on this earth, including our life, is meaningless.

The life of mankind becomes meaningless when they do not know the will of God and they do not live the life God planned for them to live. This is the reason our life is meaningless.

Acts 14:15 “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them.

When we turn away from God and live a life without knowing God who created heaven and earth, our life is worthless. However, when we return to God and do what God created us for, our life is not meaningless anymore. In this sense if we know the will of God and do the will of God, our life would not be meaningless.

Today too, people in this world are living the life of meaninglessness. They try hard to form certain meaning from their life: Some through material things such as money and power; others through mental things such as wisdom and knowledge. However, at the end of the life they realize that their life was meaningless, a chase after wind.

On the other hand, God have been gracious to us and allowed us to know the true God who created the heaven and earth. Now God is teaching us to turn away from the meaningless life and to seek God.

1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

God invited us to take part in the work of God, which is the only thing that is not in vain. Father and Mother called us to be gospel workers. Now let us do the work of God by preaching the gospel and run toward the heaven for the reward God prepares for the one who do the work of God.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.
