Passover, the Testimony of Eternal Life
Mt 26:17-19, 26-28 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’ ” So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. . . . While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
After directing the disciples to make preparations, Jesus spent His last moments with them celebrating the Passover. He established the Passover as the feast that contains His precious flesh and blood. Therefore, only through the Passover can all mankind eat Jesus’ flesh and drink His blood. Ultimately, the promise of eternal life, contained in the New Covenant Passover, is the testimony of all testimonies.
Jesus said that no one can have life without eating the flesh of the Son of Man and drinking His blood. How, than, can we be saved without celebrating the Passover? Those with an ambiguous faith should not be overconfident in their salvation. They must have the testimony of salvation confirmed through the Bible.
Lk 22:7-15, 19-20 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”. . . They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” . . . And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”
The day before His curcifixion, Jesus proclaimed the Passover as the covenant of life. With the words, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover,” Jesus showed how anxious He was to save us.
In the truth of the Passover, we can become a new creation through Jesus’ flesh and blood, have eternal life, and enter the Kingdom of Heaven. That is why Jesus eagerly desired to eat the Passover with His disciples. The New Covenant contains His flesh and blood along with His earnest desire to save sinners. All this is His will to take us back to the Kingdom of Heaven.
