‘A soft answer turns away wrath,’ ‘Good words cost naught.’ These describe how important a word is in our life. Even God teaches the importance of a word in the Bible.
“…For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.
35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.”
Jesus said ‘good word comes from the good man and evil word from the evil man.’
The good and gentle man who resemble the nature of God always give thanks and glory to God and speak good word to others. But the evil man makes rude word God hates ,and his inappropriate speech hurts others. Let us remember Jesus’s word ‘For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.’
“We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check. When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”
The tongue is a fire. Just as a great forest is set on fire by a small spark, a great sin begins from a small word. Besides, evil word falls people’s faith and makes unjust result against God’s will. By your word, it can be the glory of God or can not.
“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
The unbelievers sometimes realize God through our word and behavior. Our good word may represents God’s glory or rude and evil word may cover it. As Jesus did, and as the Apostle in the Bible did, we should try to practice God’s teaching.
